External Equipment FAQ

What equipment would I need?

When recording ShoutOut videos at an event, all you need is your smartphone, but having a few other things would improve the quality. This includes: a gimbal, headphones, external microphone, and possibly an adaptor if your phone doesn’t have a microphone jack.

How can I film steadier shots if I have shaky hands?

Having a tight grip on the phone helps, but if you really need some extra support we recommend you use a small gimbal.

What phone can I use to record ShoutOut clips and videos?

You can use any smartphone that has a working camera and microphone. You do not need any external tools for ShoutOut to work.

What should I do if there is too much background noise at my filming location or busy event?

We recommend using an external microphone if the event is way too busy, as it will reduce a lot of the background noise.

Do I need an external microphone when I record at events?

You will only need an external microphone if the event is considerably busy and loud, but an external microphone is generally not needed when recording ShoutOut videos. All you need is a smartphone and that’s it! If you're looking for a good external microphone that's still affordable, you can check out some of the links below for our recommendations:

How do I check if my external microphone works?

Make sure to plug your external microphone in fully. Film a video and gently tap the external microphone. When you play back the video and you hear the taps loudly then it will be working.

What do I do if the subject is too dark or the lighting isn't great at the filming location?

If the subject is too dark or the lighting isn't great, you can always get an external light. There are a lot of small lights that you can attach to your smartphone and will really help improve the quality of your footage if the location calls for better lighting.
